Agility
Agility is the newest
in dog sports. Most dogs as well as Westies find this a fun and
exciting sport. It is a real confident builder and Westies are quick
to learn the obstacles. Having a good obedience background is a real
must as your dog must run the course off leash. Agility is divided
up into 3 levels of competition, Novice, Open and Excellent (AKC
rules). As you move up to each level, more obstacles are used and
the course becomes more extreme.
Obedience
Obedience is a must for all Westies. It
teaches a Westie manners as well as shows you how to have control over
your Westie. Obedience competition is divided up into 3 levels,
Novice, Open and Utility. Novice is done mainly on leash and shows
that you have control of your dog. Open is all off leash and
includes retrieving and jumping. Utility again is off leash consists
of hand signals, jumping and scent discrimination.
Earthdog
This is what terriers are all
about. We're ratters. American Kennel Club created the AKC Earthdog trials
to show if a terrier still has what it takes. Earthdog trials are a lot of
fun. This is how it works. The dog follows the scent of the rat down into
a small 9x9 inch tunnel. The dog has to duck and crawl along. At
the end is a caged rat and the dog gets to bark and dig at it but not
actually catch it. There are four tests, Intro to Quarry, Junior earthdog,
Senior earthdog and Master earthdog, and only three titles. You don't get
a title for the Intro to Quarry
